Facebook Group Formed to Catch Date-rapist

At a University of British Columbia party hosted by the Beta fraternity 11 women were drugged. A Beta Theta Pi Fraternity held on September 21st lead to these women being drugged.

Stephanie Ataliotis attended this party with her friends but soon left after feeling sick. Stephanie became sick and after throwing up for hours the next morning went to hospital. It was discovered that her system contained BHP. BHP is short for gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid which is a sedative. This drug is commonly known as a date-rape drug.

Ataliotis wrote on her Facebook group “Help Find Out Who Was Trying To Rape Girls At The Beta Party On Friday.”

It is fortunate that Ataliotis felt sick early and left the party with her friends. Otherwise this scenario would have been much more disastrous. Ataliotis says “I was feeling sick and kind of out of it. I didn’t feel drunk, I felt different. Everything was kind of blurry and I wasn’t really talking. I went up to someone I sort of knew and told him that I needed my friends and that I needed to go home and that I wasn’t feeling well.”

University campuses are attractive to rapists because there are lots of young girls. Campus parties are an easy way for rapists to target girls as there are many girls who don’t know anyone and are socially drinking to fit in. These girls are anxious to meet new people as they are alone and don’t know anyone at the party. Such girls are perfect targets for date-rapists.

According the University of Alberta over 80 percent of women assaulted on campus know their attackers and 50 percent of attacks are cases of date-rape. Statistics Canada reports that only six percent of sexual assaults are ever reported to police.
