What are all the white spots all over my fish?

What are the white spots all over my tetras and platies? How can I treat it?

it’s most likely ich which is a parasite. the most effective treatment i’ve found and it has always worked for me… never lost a fish to it if you catch it early enough…. is temp up to mid 80′sF but do this gradually, only a few degrees an hour, and add freshwater salt to get the slime coats primed and healthy. read the box of salt to know just how much to add. some people say lights off, some say lights on. i haven’t noticed a difference either way. and then water changes, 25% 1 to 2 times a week for week after the last spot has disappeared.

there are three stages to the ich life cycle.

eggs that can be found in the gravel bed, so it is important to vaccuum your gravel as your doing water changes

free swimming flukes that are looking for a host, usually with a weakened immune system

and the ich spots that you see.. or cysts. the salt in the water will help form a thicker slime coat on your fish helping to reduce the chance of the ich latching on and the tempurature rise speeds up the life cycle so they have less of a chance to survive and reproduce properly. i find it usually takes about 5 to 7 days for the spots to disappear and then another week to know it’s out of my tank for good.

sounds like your tetras are pretty covered though… good luck! you may want to get on the treatment asap. there are chemical treatments out there but i’ve never had any success with them and they tend to really mess with my ammonia levels during treatment.
