How Traditional are “Traditional” American Martial Arts?
I’ve heard that two of the most popular martial arts in American are Shotokan Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Ive been trying to find out when these styles came about .Ive read that Shotokan was established in 1908 by Gichin Funicoshi to use martial arts to teach children proper conduct. Is that true?
I studied both Shotokan and Hapkido for several years. I know where they came from. I just want to know how old Shotokan and Tae Kwon Do actually are and what styles they might have come from. Thanks
This is a good question, because all the old and ancient masters were constantly developing their style, and constantly testing it in real life and death combat. What we call traditional, usually developed in an era where this still happened. Shotokan was heavily influenced by Funakoshi’s main teacher, Itosu, who introduced Karate to the Okinawan school system. To make it work for school, he dropped the deadliest moves, the night training, much of the breathing exercises (similar to what Navy Seals do) made for combat, and much of the explanations of moves. I do not doubt Funakoshi understood the 15 kata he knew better than he taught his students. He did, after all, teach at a public university. He may have passed his true style to a student or two, but I doubt if that lineage exists, it even goes by the name Shotokan. (The name came about after Funakoshi’s death)
So, in answer to your question, it’s hard to establish how traditional a martial art is, though many Chinese, Okinawan and Japanese masters have gotten in trouble over the years for teaching the good stuff to Americans, (Shimabuku, Lee) I don’t know of any Americans that have a Menkyo Kaiden stating the system is passed on to American control.
