Malware Is The Dangerous Side Of The Internet
Microsoft® defined malware on their website as “software that a cybercriminal can use to steal your bank account information, track everything you type, send out malicious software or spam, or harm your computer.” Malware is the dangerous side of the Internet.
Malware is an infection of the computer that is obtained by using an unprotected PC online. Most malware is downloaded from Internet sites designed to attack unprotected computers. Malware is dangerous to the computer user. It has the potential to disable the computer, slowing it down, and preventing it from installing preventative measures. This frightening reality of the Internet takes the fun out of surfing and shopping online. Some forms of malware send user information across the Internet. There are malware programs that use the computer resources to run background applications. Most malware is used for monetary gain for the authors.
Malware means malicious software. Software is a program installed. Malware is software installed without permission of the computer user.
Malware is also known as spyware, virus, worm, bot, trojan, exploit, keylogger, rootkit, dialer, url injector, wabbits, backdoors and adware. Each type of malware infects a computer in a different way. The infections vary in the level of danger to the user, but, even the least of the malware infections can affect the performance of the PC.
The dangers of malware are identity theft, interjection of pop-ups, and redirection of URL’s and downloading of unwanted programs that disable regular security on the computer. The anti-virus program icon may still appear in the taskbar, but the malware could be making it ineffectual. This action will open the computer to all kinds of security risks.
Malware can be running undetected in the background of a new computer. This is common due to the fact that pre-installed software gives a new computer user a false confidence in protection. The truth is most security programs do not adequately block malware.
As reported in The Register®, researchers from IT security firm Trend Micro® concluded that many computers remain infected for more than two years, with an average infection length of 300 days. This period gives the infectious software a foothold in the system. The malicious software can even block anti-malware tools from cleaning the computer affectively.
Sunbelt Software company reports on their website “Increasingly, the web is a dangerous place with thousands of new threats emerging daily, as malware writers and security firms engage in a cat-and-mouse game.”
With this in mind, a computer user must be on the lookout for subtle changes in performance of the PC. The other way a user can help prevent malware from taking hold is to test for malware regularly, not waiting for the computer to slow down. A user should always watch the lower left corner of the web browser screen, looking for the website routing information. The site name should match the web location that the user was trying to reach. In Internet Explorer 8, the website name is in bold while the rest of the name is in normal non-bold font. This is designed to give the user a visual affirmation that they have landed on the site they expected. A user should always look at the address bar to verify.
Products that add “safe-surfing” marks on the search results pages help the user use sites that do not have malware. This is another tool for users to stay away from the dangerous ones.
With preparation, attention, and the right security tools, a user can face the dangers of the Internet and enjoy surfing the web.
